Ok, a question for those of you who love to cook… What’s the first thing that you remember creating in the kitchen? I feel like for most of us, there are probably one or two special recipes from the early years that really sparked a culinary curiosity. Just like a musician might always remember a life-changing tune they listened to as a kid, or a painter can pinpoint the very masterpiece that first captivated them, even a home cook has certain nostalgic dishes that helped to fuel their passion for cooking delicious dishes from scratch.
For me, these brownies are definitely one of those recipes. Although I grew up in the kitchen – under the feet of my mom – and have so many food memories from throughout my childhood, it’s a strawberry galette and these Mexican brownies that really piqued my interest in learning to cook. While I never had a problem tasting and enjoying all sorts of deliciousness, somehow, it’s thanks to these two desserts that I decided I wanted to learn how to make all this yummy food myself. My mom actually found this recipe in a magazine, and suggested that I try making it. Perhaps it was fate – since I’ve made this exact recipe at least one hundred times since!
These Mexican chocolate brownies are dense, rich, and filled with chocolate. Just as you’d want any brownie to be, they’re super fudgy, with just enough of a crisp, chewy exterior. A hit of cinnamon adds a warm flavor that perfectly offsets the sweet and bitter chocolate. Although these brownies are perfectly delicious any time of year, I think they’re particularly welcome in the colder, winter months. I’ve been waiting for this recipe – thanks! My first culinary masterpiece was quiche lorraine baked for a “gourmet club” dinner. When “Men Don’t Eat Quiche” was popular, girlfriends (who were single professionals recently out of college) gathered once a month at one of our apartments for a “gourmet” dinner. The quotation marks are there because it was–in reality–nothing more than our ambitious first attempts at preparing and serving guests a complete meal. In keeping with the times, that quiche has morphed into a regular on my family’s table; transformed into a frittate. Sweet potatoes replace the dough, yogurt replaces the cream, leeks and kale replace the onion and bacon, while sprinkles of parmesan replace the copious amounts of gooey emmenthal. It’s all good!

Have to say that my first recipe I really made over and over and OVER was chocolate chip cookies! I started with the one on the back of the flour bag. Then worked my way to a Paula Dean recipe that had raspberries in it {SO gourmet, I know} 😉 And then eventually I found food blogs and a whole other universe opened up! Though I have to say I think I made chocolate chip cookies so much in my pre-blogging years that I hardly make them now 🙂 But I digress! I am obsessed with brownies and these look absolutely fabulous!

By any chance do you know if these are the same Mexican Chocolate Brownies that were the hit of the cafe on the Scripps College campus in Claremont, California several years ago? I still dream of those brownies—the best-ever study break treat!
