I’ve always loved the idea of having a go-to cocktail. Doesn’t it just seem so refined, and elegant, and mature, to have a signature drink?!? Like Carrie Bradshaw’s Cosmopolitan, for instance – that strong, fruity, pink cocktail that served as a perfect reflection of her character and that spoke to an entire generation.

Of course, trends come and go, and Carrie’s favorite drink has long been replaced by a slew of other up-and-coming, fashionable, boozy libations. When thinking about what could become my own signature cocktail, I’ve got a couple of contenders. I have to say, recently, a good Moscow mule has definitely been one of my favorites. I love the combination of tart lime juice with sweet, spicy ginger beer, and it’s a drink that’s pretty easy to order anywhere. Although, I have to admit, when the timing is right, a really great margarita is hard to beat. Luckily, these happen to also be two drinks that I’ve pretty much mastered making at home.

Sometimes, though, it’s fun to experiment with new types of liquor and new flavor combinations. Today, with this lemon rosemary gin fizz, I’m doing both! Gin, of course, is flavored predominantly with juniper berries, giving it that piney, sharp note. I think that these flavors pair perfectly with the bold taste of rosemary. An infused simple syrup is my favorite easy trick for adding the taste of the pungent herb, along with some sweetness. Lemon juice adds a nice tart balance, and effervescent sparkling water finishes off this drink on a light note. This winter, I’m pairing this cocktail with all of my favorite happy hour appetizers and savory dinners, alike!

  • I like to rim my glasses with lemon juice and sugar.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 sprigs rosemary
  • 4 lemons
  • 1 cup gin
  • sparkling water

Directions

  1. To make a rosemary simple syrup, combine sugar with ½ cup water in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium heat, swirling pan frequently to avoid burning, until liquid is simmering and sugar is dissolved, about five minutes.
  3. Turn off heat, add rosemary sprigs, and let cool completely.
  4. Meanwhile, juice lemons into a mason jar.
  5. Remove rosemary sprigs from cooled simple syrup, and add syrup and gin to the jar.
  6. Fill jar with ice, screw on the lid, and shake until liquid is well combined and very cold.
  7. Fill four glasses with ice, then pour liquid over ice, dividing evenly. Top each glass off with sparkling water.
