My friends, I feel like fall is slipping quickly into winter. Granted, we don’t have too much of a winter here in California (so I don’t mean to complain, for those of you suffering through actual winter issues like snow and ice). But it’s not just the weather, it’s more the feeling in the air.

Suddenly, I walk out of the office after work and the sky is dark. Not a hazy purple, streaked with orange and red, as marks the sunsets we’ve been having this fall. But really black. The sun is gone and night time is here, before I’ve even made it home. With the dark comes a certain stillness. Gone is the excitement of the back-to-school season and Halloween. Instead, it is replaced by a sense of calm, a quiet desire to hunker down and enjoy the slow evenings as they come.

For me, this darkness and stillness means plenty of hot tea, an abundance of new books to be enjoyed, and the start to my holiday baking! What could be more enjoyable, on a cold and gloomy evening, than to relish in the warmth of a cozy kitchen, particularly with a batch of cookies in the oven? These brown butter snickerdoodles are everything for me, right now. The dough is rich and nutty with the taste of browned butter, yet light and chewy, too. Of course, we can’t forget the trademark sweet-and-spicy addition of cinnamon sugar! If you’re looking for a delicious cookie to make this season, or anytime, really, I think that this snickerdoodle is it. 🙂

These Brown Butter Snickerdoodles are my new favorite cookie for the holiday season. Each bite is perfectly rich and chewy, with just enough sweet cinnamon flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions

  1. Place butter in a small saucepan and melt over medium heat.
  2. Let cook, swirling pan occasionally so butter doesn’t burn, until fragrant and browned, about five minutes.
  3. Transfer butter to a large mixing bowl and place in the fridge until solid but not hard, about thirty minutes. It should be the consistency of softened butter.
  4. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350°. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.
  6. To browned butter, add ½ cup sugar and brown sugar. Beat until light and fluffy.
  7. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in vanilla.
  8. Add flour mixture and mix until just combined.
  9. In a small bowl, stir together remaining ½ cup sugar and cinnamon.
  10. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough and roll them in the cinnamon sugar. Place balls of dough on the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake until lightly browned, about ten minutes.
