What are your favorite little indulgences? Your favorite small treats, that will always put a smile on your face? Sometimes I get caught up in the throes of everyday life – whether that’s hurrying to and from the office, running all sorts of little errands, or rushing to bed to ensure that I get enough sleep – and I forget to savor and appreciate the little things that actually have the power to bring me lots of joy.

Yet when I take the time to think about it for a second, I realize that there are many small pleasures that make me inordinately happy. I love treating myself to a simple bouquet of fresh flowers at the grocery store, taking five minutes to play a crazy game of fetch with my roommate’s beyond adorable pups, lighting a sweet-smelling candle, or curling up with a mug of tea and a good book before bed. These acts may be simple, cheap, and, most importantly, easy, but I find that they really improve my mood! Especially when it’s cold and dreary and rainy out, and I’ve been soaked on the walk home from work – yes, this has happened to me approximately five times in the last two weeks. Luckily, even the darkest, most stormy night can be made a little brighter by my favorite chamomile tea and a gripping new novel. So today, this is a little reminder to treat yourself to something nice!

For me, of course, food (and dessert!)-lover that I am, sweet indulgences definitely have to be on this list, too. And this grapefruit yogurt pound cake definitely makes the cut. This cake is pretty much everything that I could ever want in a dessert – dramatic much?! It’s so rich and buttery, as all the best pound cakes are. It’s bursting with tart citrusy flavor, from grapefruit zest, simple syrup, and a sweet grapefruit glaze. And, it may be the most moist cake I’ve ever made, meaning that it lasts beautifully on the counter. This little baby will wait patiently until you need a little slice for an afternoon pick-me-up or after dinner snack. It is the perfect treat to savor and enjoy, and sure to bring a sweet smile to your face!

  1. Mouthwatering. I imagine the slight bitterness of the grapefruit is a great foil to the sweetness of the cake. Want to try this when I have a free Saturday. THanks for sharing. margaret
